Creation Begets Creation

I never thought of myself as a “creative” person.

I was bad at art, I was not very good with words, and, even throughout my years learning violin, I loved learning what someone else wrote but despised improvising on my own.

I figured that was simply who I was destined to be.

But I think there has always been a small voice in my head that has encouraged me to share, it has encouraged me to make. The trouble is, the more that I ignored it and told it to pipe down, the quieter and quieter it got.

I was destined to be a consumer, not creator, for the rest of my life.

But one day in 2020, the voice tried what I imagine to be one, last desperate attempt at speaking to me and told me that I should start a podcast. It took me three months from that moment to actually record the first episode and another two months for that episode to be released, but I had this feeling then that life has changed forever.

And it had.

The podcast led me to start believing a YouTube account was possible. Putting myself out there in video form made me think “Why not?” at the idea of putting myself out there in the form of a newsletter or a blog (you can actually see my first attempt at a blog here).

Each of these projects has fed my soul in a way that I had never experienced before. Every single one has helped me grow in a unique way, and I know that they have all lifted each other up as well. I am better at making videos because of the podcast. I am better at writing because I learned to express myself in both video and audio form. Creation begets creation. None of these things are done in a vacuum.

I still wouldn’t define myself as a “creator” but instead I’m “a guy who creates stuff”. There’s a distinction, I think. I don’t want to get caught up in the label of a thing; instead I seek to focus on the action being taken.

I do not want to be the noun, I want to be do the verb.

So what do you want to make with your life? Is it art in the traditional sense? Maybe it is a business? Possibly it is sharing your story in writing or through photos, video, or audio.

Whatever it is, I encourage to start creating. If your small voice has quieted to the point where it is barely audible, I’ll speak on its behalf to remind you that you have something beautiful within you to share with the rest of the world.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Steven Pressfield from The War of Art.
“Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”

Happy creating, my friends 💪🏾

Sending you love ❤️

I hope that, today, you have the best day ever.
